Mommy just needs a break, am I right!? If you are like most moms I know, you have been running yourself ragged buying gifts for everyone, baking, hosting, visiting Santa, entertaining the kids while they’re on break. Oh wait, now they’re sick. So are you, but you don’t have time to stop. You constantly take care of everything and everyone but yourself.
Now it’s a new year and you realize in the midst of crazy town that you forgot to exercise and you were eating like crap. Detoxing probably sounds like a lot of work right now. I get it! Mommy needs a break!!!
Here’s the thing… Just like going to the gym or having sex with your husband, it always sounds like too much effort but you’re always glad you did it and you feel better after. You even swear you should do it more often in that moment. But the next day comes and you’re tired again. I get you, girl! But you have to, you must… put your oxygen mask on first! If you aren’t taking care of #1 you are going to have less to give to those little energy suckers that you love so dearly. Even worse, the long-term consequence of not putting yourself first is disease. That certainly isn’t good for anyone!
Detox can be as easy or hard as you want it to be. Here are a few changes that will make the most difference and give you the most bang for your buck!
Have sex at least 2 times a week. See, now your husband already likes me and is encouraging you to make an appointment. It worked!! Jk but seriously, studies show bla bla bla. They do show great things but here is the real reason I am suggesting this: As a mom and wife, I’m hear to tell you that if you invest in that extra 10 to 20 min a week (I’m a realist). Your hubby is going to be happy to help you around the house or with the kids. This frees up time for you to meal plan, hit the gym, meditate (aka wonder around target aimlessly). All with the loving support of a happy husband. Those things I just listed become much harder to accomplish with a grumpy man at home! If you’re already putting out more than twice a week, your hubby should already be doing the dishes!! Just sayin’.
Drink more water. It’s really not that damn hard! Pour it in a cup and freaking drink the stuff! I have a 24-ounce hydro flask and I make sure to drink 3 a day. No matter your size you must be getting AT LEAST 60 oz a day. I do have an opinion on type of water, so if you’re interested, you can read about that here. But just drink water, in fact, make water the ONLY thing you drink all day. Except a morning cup of Joe, cause if you’re a mom you need that shit!
Eat more veggies! The food pyramid is a freaking joke! To read about my opinion on food, click here. But one thing they have right is 4 servings of fruits and veggies. Most people don’t have a hard time getting down apples and banaynays, it’s the celery and broccoli we struggle with. Make it happen! At least 4 servings of veggies per day! Pre-cut them so you have veggies to snack on, throw em in a smoothie in the morning, make 2 veggies with dinner instead of a grain. Do what you need to do but get in more veggies! Kale! There… I said the K word to appease all my hippy colleagues.
Move your body! I’m not expecting you to go for a walk or a run, the weather is crap outside! But do something. Download a work out video, get the 7 minute workout app, pick up some weights and a resistance band when you’re meditating through Target, join a gym. You don’t even have to do this daily to make it worth your while. Do it 2-3 times a week to start. That is 2-3 times better than nothin!
Stop eating sugar. Just stop. That crap is poison and I’m not being sarcastic. No more cookies, cakes, or pies. The holidays are behind you. Tis the season for KALE! Now the other naturopaths REALLY love me!
Meditate: Get an app or just find the time and place to unplug. Maybe it is only 5 min a day but you need to detox your brain and give those poor little adrenals a break. Deep breathing is a great way to detoxify Co2 that our bodies hold on to when we are under constant stress. Breathe, let your thoughts go inward for a few minutes and tune everything out. Stress reduction is good for all aspects of health, yet it is the one thing that is most overlooked. Do it!
Now go pick 1, 2, 3, 4 or all 5 of those things and shift toward health. You need to take care of yourself in order to be a better mom. And you need to be an example for your kids. Detoxing can be any one of these things. Or it can be a much more comprehensive program that I would love to help you with. I’m trying to take the world over with healthy people here! Could ya help me out!?
