When you’re a mom, it’s natural that you make your kids’ needs a priority. They’re dependent on you and need you every single day. However, it’s important for moms to remember that prioritizing your kids is not meant to come at the cost of neglecting yourself. When you ignore your own personal needs, you are more likely to be tired and stressed. Taking care of yourself is an integral part of taking care of your children. Being at your best is going to enable you to be the best mom you can be and allow you to live a happier, fuller life.
Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It’s true for your kids, and it’s true for you too. If you find yourself having no more than a cup of coffee to get you going in the morning, find the time to have something more filling. Coffee alone will not help to keep you healthy. Breakfast sets the tone of the rest of the day – have something nutritious.
Be smart about snacking. Having a healthy snack throughout the day will keep your energy levels high, and with a little prep you can make this easy for yourself. Just cut up veggies and/or fruits in advance, then put them into Ziploc bags. Pop them in the fridge and you have a quick snack to grab later.
Eat right. Of course, in addition to healthy snacks you’ll want to give yourself health meals too. Stay away from overly processed or sugary foods. Fresh foods are good and energy boosting. Make sure you’re getting a healthy amount of fruits, vegetables, and proteins. Avoid even buying things you know you’ll have a hard time resisting, such as cookies, chips, sodas, and so on.
Exercise regularly. Don’t let your busy schedule prevent you from working out. Being active is key to staying healthy, so make time to exercise. Try scheduling daily exercise either first thin in the morning or in the evening before bed.
Don’t forget to stay hydrated. Daily intake of water is important. Even mild dehydration can take a toll on your body in the form of headaches, fatigue, and lack of energy. Drink water regularly throughout the day.
Get enough sleep. Lack of sleep is detrimental to your health, your mood, and your stress levels. You will feel much better and less stressed when you make sure to get in enough sleep each night.
Take time for yourself and relax. Don’t let yourself get overwhelmed. Stop, breathe, and refocus. Take a break when you need to. Plan a few hours a week to do something alone, just for yourself – whether that be going for a walk, window shopping, or finding a quiet place to read. Whatever helps you gather yourself.
Schedule regular appointments with your doctor. Regular visits to your doctor will help you maintain good health. Not only can your doctor monitor for more serious health issues, but they can advise you on what you need to focus on the most to improve and maintain your health.
