Magnesium is one of the critical minerals in our bodies. A lack of magnesium can manifest itself in a plethora of ways. Unfortunately, that can make it extremely hard to identify when you have a deficiency. Statistics vary among sources, but it is estimated that over 80 percent of people are magnesium deficient.
Part of the reason for this is modern agricultural techniques, which have caused soil depletion. This means that compared to 50 years ago, conventionally-grown vegetables may not take up as many minerals from the soil as they used to.
Up until a few years ago, natural spring water used to be an excellent source of minerals, but most people today drink filtered water, which has significantly fewer minerals in it by comparison.

There is no better way to get vitamins and nutrients into your body than by eating foods that are high in magnesium. Foods that are high in magnesium include spinach, almonds, quinoa, cashews, and avocado. Of course, not everyone (i.e. kids) likes those foods.

Drinking the occasional glass of wine or pint of beer is not going to be a problem, but if you drink a lot of alcohol, this will deplete your mineral stores.
