It’s not too late to make a commitment in the new year to keep you and your family healthy. The year has just begun, and it is time for beginnings. Resolve yourself to making healthy habits and doing whatever you must to keep yourself and your family happy and healthy.

Here are a few health tips to get you started this year:

Protect Against Flu

Flu season isn’t over yet, so it’s not too late to get vaccinated for this year’s flu. Getting both yourself and your children vaccinated can save a lot of discomfort later – not to mention helping prevent the spread of the flu. After all, yearly flu vaccines prevent 70 to 90 percent of the flu in children and adults.

Get Regular Sleep

This is important for children as well as adults. A good night’s sleep helps boost your child’s development and health, and also helps with your physical and mental health. Try to keep a regular sleep schedule by going to bed and getting up at the same time each day. Keep in mind that while adults only need 7 to 9 hours of sleep, children – including teenagers – need 9 to 12.

Know the Signs of Depression and Anxiety

If you suspect you are having trouble with depression or anxiety, seek the help of a professional. Signs to look for in yourself and in your loved ones include changes in mood, weight, sleep habits, activities, and work (or school work). Children and teens are not exempt from the effects of anxiety and depression. Keep in mind that many disorders that people struggle with in adulthood, including depression, panic and other anxiety disorders, and schizophrenia, begin in adolescence. Seeking help quickly can curb the effects of these disorders.

Commit to Being More Active

Being active can be a commitment a family makes together. Evaluate your activity level and the activity levels of your family. Set goals and figure out negative and positive consequences for neglecting or completing those goals. Try walking with your family two to three times a week to get in the habit of moving around – or find another fun activity to do together that will keep you moving.

Of course, a huge part of maintaining your health is regular visits to your doctor.
