Naturopathic medicine recognizes an inherent self-healing process and part of that process is the philosophy of prevention. This philosophy can also help you when you want to prevent that New Year’s Hangover. This post will offer some pre-emptive strikes to reduce or even prevent a New Year’s Day hangover.
#1 EAT A FILLING DINNER BEFORE THE PARTY
A filling dinner will help with the alcohol absorption and prevent you from snacking on deep-fried bar food later. Even a small snack of slightly salty foods can boost those hangover-fighting electrolytes. Chunky almonds and nuts for their healthy fats and proteins can also slow the absorption of alcohol and keep the hangover at bay.
#2 DRINK WATER AFTER EVERY DRINK
This simple rule makes it easy to get through the night. The benefits of water between drink are two-fold; you drink less alcohol and you feel fuller preventing you from eating “bad” snacks later. The biggest benefit to water between drinks is staying hydrated which is a large factor in preventing a hangover
#3 DETOX SUPPORT B VITAMINS AND BRASSICA VEGETABLES
You can do this before and after the party. You want to support the detox process so take some B Vitamin supplements and load up on Brassica vegetables. These are the broccoli, cauliflower, kale, cabbage, Brussels sprouts. These vegetables contain the enzymes for liver detox.
#4 SWEAT IT OUT WITH SAUNA OR EXERCISE
Exercise stimulates the lymphatic system to excrete toxins and gets the blood flowing. Yoga counts too. If you have access to an infrared sauna, this is a great option for stimulating the detoxification process.
Have a safe and Happy New Year and if you follow these simple tips you should be in great shape the next morning. Avoid the aspirin, while this may offer temporary relieve you taxing your liver—which is already working hard trying to detoxify.
